Slow Cooker Grandma’s Famous Baked Beans

This recipe was sent to us by Crock-Pot Ladies reader Pam Barnes for her grandma’s famous baked beans done up in the slow cooker.

We just love “grandma recipes” they are always the best aren’t they?

Unless your grandma can’t cook…

Then this recipe is for you because it comes from a grandma that CAN cook!

Thanks Pam and her grandma for the great recipe!

This recipe serves a crowd too…12 servings. So this is a great dish to take to your next pot-luck or serve at a outdoor barbecue. Everyone loves some baked beans at a BBQ right?

There is a wee bit of prep work involved with these beans…but not too much. Just cutting up some onion and frying up some bacon.

Bacon

You had me at bacon Pam’s grandma!

Then you just open up some cans of baked beans and toss those in (Pam prefers Bush’s Baked Beans, but feel free to use whatever brand YOU like). And then, just let it simmer away for 4 hours and let it rest for 1 hour, to thicken up those beautiful bean juices.

That sounds wrong…bean juices.

But oh well…that is what they are!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Prepare These Baked Beans Ahead Of Time?

This recipe for baked beans can be prepared ahead of time. In fact, the flavors develop and only get better if made a day or two ahead of time. You can make this recipe up to 5 days in advance of when you want to serve them and store them in the refrigerator. To reheat the baked beans you can put them back in your slow cooker and set the temperature to the LOW setting for about 2 hours or until the beans are hot. And then turn your slow cooker to the WARM setting to keep the beans warm for up to 5 hours while serving.

Can I Double This Recipe?

This recipe can easily be doubled. To double the recipe use a larger slow cooker (6 quart or larger) and cook for an additional 1 hour.

Do These Baked Beans Freeze Well?

Baked beans freeze well for longer term storage. If you have leftover baked beans or just want to make a big batch of beans and store them in the freezer you can easily do that. Once the beans are cooked, turn your slow cooker OFF and allow the beans to come to room temperature. Then, spoon the beans into freezer containers or freezer zippered plastic food storage bags. Label your containers or bags with their contents and date and store in the freezer for up to 6 months.
